Description

A high beam quality doesn't only have advantages!

The constant development of lasers for material processing leads to permanent enhancement of beam quality und therefore to smaller focus diameters at high power. For laser welding applications a high quality beam source also has disadvantages, i.e. welding of conjunctions with  gaps or tolerances of position of 100 µm and more.

The first method to increase the beam diameter in the process is by defocusing. It shows that this procedure is in most cases not helpful. By defocusing the laser beam the power density on the work piece changes. This could cause instabilities in the process. Also it is possible that the necessary power density can not be reached which makes processes like key hole welding impossible.

It is useful to adept the beam shape on the surface of the work piece to the requirements of the process the geometrie of the component. With the help of a high-dynamic beam guide like the ILV-LS scanner module the advantages and capabilities of expensive, high quality laser sources for laser material processing can be used unrestricted.

This way of dynamic beam manipulation seperates itself from other process strategies like moving galvo or polygon scanner units. Its capabilities of high power limits, low costs and easy integration or upgrade are the main advantages compared to those other scanners.

The power density rules the process!
